The split-tool problem
If you're writing a book today, your toolchain probably looks like this: a manuscript app (Scrivener, Sudowrite, NovelCrafter), an editor pass somewhere, an EPUB export, then a separate audiobook step that involves either hiring a narrator (£3,000+ for a novel), renting studio time, or stitching together AI-voice tools that don't know your book exists.
Each handoff loses something. Chapter breaks don't match. Character names get mispronounced. Edits made on the manuscript never reach the audiobook without re-rendering hours of audio.
MimicReader exists because we got tired of that. The platform writes, edits, exports, and narrates from one project — and edits propagate.
What "all in one place" actually means
Open Projects in MimicReader and you'll find a single workspace that holds:
- Chapters — markdown editor, drag-to-reorder, word count per chapter and total
- Metadata — title, blurb, language, genre, target audience (used by the AI tools for tone)
- Cover — AI-generated via Flux in 5 styles (oil painting, fantasy, watercolor, minimal modern, photorealistic)
- Characters — extracted from your manuscript text, with names, attributes, voice presets
- Exports — EPUB, PDF, DOCX, plain markdown — generated on demand from current chapters
- Audiobook — generates from the same chapters with the voice you pick
- Public share — token-based read-only URL you can send to early readers or beta readers
Who this is for
Indie authors who don't have £3,000 for a narrator
The cheapest professional audiobook narration runs about £100-£200 per finished hour. A 10-hour novel costs £1,000-£2,000 at the low end. ACX (Audible's exchange) royalty-share deals split future earnings 50/50 forever. MimicReader generates an hour of audio for £1 of credits or £2.50/month subscription — and you keep 100% of the rights.
Self-publishers shipping fast
Traditional publishing audiobook pipeline: write → submit → 6 months → audio. MimicReader pipeline: write → generate → 30 minutes → audio (for a typical novel). You can run an audiobook beta during the final edit pass and gather feedback before "officially" launching.
Researchers and educators with long documents
Lecture notes, course material, internal memos — anything that's too long to read but too valuable to skim. Write it as a Project, export it as EPUB for your team, narrate it for the commute. One source, two delivery formats.
Anyone writing in a non-English language
MimicReader generates in 23 languages with native pronunciation. Spanish authors get Spanish narration. Polish authors get Polish. No translation indirection, no English-accent-reading-Polish.
How the writing tools differ from "AI writers"
Tools like Sudowrite or NovelCrafter focus on generating text. They'll write a paragraph for you in a chosen style. MimicReader doesn't compete on that — the editor is plain markdown by design. What we add is everything around the writing:
| Capability | Sudowrite | NovelCrafter | MimicReader |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI text generation | Yes (primary) | Yes (primary) | Limited (Workshop helpers) |
| EPUB export | No | Limited | Yes (built-in) |
| Audiobook generation | No | No | Yes (23 languages) |
| Cover art (AI) | No | No | Yes (Flux, 5 styles) |
| Character extraction | Partial | Yes | Yes |
| Voice cloning | No | No | Yes (5s sample) |
| Public share link | No | No | Yes (token) |
If you want a tool that writes the prose for you, those tools win. If you want a tool that takes the prose you wrote and ships it as an audiobook readers can buy or you can share, that's us.
Workflow example: a 60,000-word novel
- Create a project. Title, blurb, language, genre. Takes 30 seconds.
- Write or paste chapters. Markdown editor — drag chapters to reorder, edit in place. Saves continuously.
- Generate cover. Pick style → AI generates → keep or regenerate. ~30 seconds.
- Export EPUB. Click → download. Includes cover, TOC, properly chunked chapters. Ready for KDP / Apple Books / Smashwords.
- Pick a voice. Browse the voice library or upload a 5-second sample of your own voice / a friend's / a paid voice actor's.
- Generate audiobook. ~25 minutes of generation per hour of audio (RTF ~0.3 with our default GPU). Free 1 hour included; PAYG or £2.50/month subscription for more.
- Share or sell. M4A with chapter markers + the EPUB. Upload to Audible's ACX, BookFunnel, Findaway Voices, or self-distribute.

Create your projectWhat we don't do
Honesty matters. MimicReader is not a substitute for editing. The AI doesn't fact-check your historical novel, doesn't catch plot holes, doesn't tighten dialogue. The Workshop tools (synopsis generator, name picker, scene tagger) are helpers, not replacements for craft. If your manuscript needs a development editor, hire one.
The audiobook narration is good — many listeners can't distinguish AI voices from human in a blind test — but it's still synthetic. If you're targeting Audible's premium tier where listeners pay £20+ for celebrity narration, that's a different market.
What's coming
- Per-character voice assignment (different voice per character in dialog) — in development
- Direct ACX upload — integration in planning
- Per-chapter audio preview before full generation — coming soon
- Built-in beta-reader feedback (highlights, comments on shared link) — backlog
